There are several points I'd like to discuss:
1) The USA has a lot of natural resources. It has livestock, wheat, corn, fruit -- the USA doesn't need to buy mangoes from Malaysia when it has oranges in Florida. So don't worry too much about starvation.
2) The Bush presidency has been a disaster. If the BDI was grossly inflated due to Bush-crony shenanigans, the current drop of 93% might be a readjustment to sane economic policies. Recall that oil has been grossly inflated for years and Alex Jones has been saying it's just market manipulation.
For years I thought he was wrong about oil. Now the incredibly cheap price of oil is making me think he might have been right all along. Maybe they *do* have enough oil to run the planet for a few years and they were just manipulating the oil price to make it look scarcer than it is. The BDI may have been suffering similar "tulipmania" style inflation.
3) Rather than starting a garden, a more cost-effective approach might be to make friends with a farmer or three at the local farmer's market and start buying local. Even if the laws collapse and the country goes "Mad Max-Road Warrior" it won't hurt to be friends with some farmers. They could probably teach *me* a thing or two if I were gardening. Choose your friends carefully, as always.
