First to Secede

There is one thing certain, and I think it due to the country to say so in advance, that South Carolina is resolved to assert her separate independence; and, as she acceded separately to the compact of union, so she will, most assuredly, secede separately and alone, be the consequences what they may.

Sovereignty Flag of South Carolina

South Carolina was the first of the thirteen colonies to establish a constitution and elect a president, four months before the signing of the Declaration. She was an original signer of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the document declaring the thirteen colonies secession from Great Britain. Her independence as a free and sovereign state was acknowledged by King George in 1783. The state was independent and sovereign from 1776-1788.  In 1852 South Carolina asserted her right to secede.  In 1860 she left the union first, separately and alone. South Carolina troops fired the first shot of the War Between the States.

South Carolinian culture springs primarily from Scots-Irish stock and retains a tremendous sense of liberty and individualism. The topic of secession is one that is acceptable in most company. Those that disagree with the need seldom dismiss the validity of the topic.

As one of the Original Thirteen States and parent to the US Constitution South Carolina could exercise secession rights under the State-Federal Contract theory. Furthermore, as a former Confederate state coerced by force to rejoin the Union the state could secede using justifications under the Partial Right Variant of Remedial Right theory. Finally, Christian Southerners could use the Nationalist Variant of Primary Right theory as a justification for secession.

Active Secessionist Groups in South Carolina

South Carolina League of the South

Mission Statement: "We seek to advance the Cultural, Social, Economic, Political well-being and Independence of South Carolinians by all Legal, Ethical, and Honorable means."

Position on Secession: "We believe in the Jeffersonian principle that free people may change their government if over a long period of time it refuses to protect their lives, liberty, and property. As the present government of the United States has violated the original compact of 1789 and no longer offers its citizens such protection, we believe that the time has come for the Southern states to consider the merits of secession. The League of the South does not advocate the overthrow of the government of the United States; rather, we wish to leave peaceably and form our own nation or nations, as the people of the South shall freely decide.: Read More...

Strategy:

1.      create a climate of public opinion conducive to Southern Independence,

2.      make the League the leader of that movement

3.      de-legitimize the empire

4.      create alternative, legitimate, popular institutions,

5.      exercise moral leadership,

6.      be servant-leaders of the Southern people,

7.      act in organic local communities.

Justifications: closely aligned with the Paleo-conservative Christian causes with the addition of justifications related to cultural oppression.

Christian Exodus

Mission Statement: Move thousands of Christians to South Carolina to reestablish constitutionally limited government founded upon Christian principles. It is evident that the U.S. Constitution has been abandoned under our current federal system, and the efforts of Christian activism to restore our Godly republic have proven futile over the past three decades. The time has come for Christian Constitutionalists to protect our liberties in a State like South Carolina by interposing the State's sovereign authority retained under the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Position On Secession: ChristianExodus.org is an association of Christians who no longer wish to live under the unjust usurpation of powers by the federal government, and therefore resolves to formally disassociate itself from this tyrannical authority, and return to the model of governance of a constitutional republic. We seek a republican government constrained by constitutionally delegated powers. If this cannot be achieved within the United States, then we believe a peaceful withdrawal from the union to be the last available remedy.

Strategy: ChristianExodus.org is moving thousands of Christian constitutionalists to specific cities and counties in South Carolina through a series of emigrations. Our board of directors considers the values of this state to be very similar to the values held by our membership. Additionally, South Carolina possesses a rich history of standing up for her rights.

South Carolina can secure the rights of her citizens by interposing her authority under the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The federal government operates outside its delegated powers in the areas of education, religion, abortion, domestic behavior, intrastate communication, intrastate commerce, taxation, welfare, healthcare, gun regulation, and a host of other subjects. Most powers concerning these topics are reserved to the States under the 10th Amendment. Therefore, we will see to it that South Carolina resumes her governmental authority in these matters and that our counties and State ignore federal directives in violation of the 10th Amendment.

Justifications:

The federal government was created to protect us from the very tyranny it now practices against us...

We are violated in our right to Life:

  • Unborn babies are subject to slaughter by abortionists and their own mothers under any pretext whatsoever.
  • The elderly, infirm, and disabled are subject to forced starvation and involuntary euthanasia.
  • Citizens are subjected to the perils of imperialist entanglements abroad, and left unprotected from alien invaders at home.

We are violated in our right to Liberty:

  • Abortion continues against the wishes of many States and in violation of the reserved powers of the States under the 10th Amendment.
  • Christians are denied their rights to free speech, freedom of the press, the display of religious monuments, and other expressions of faith in the public sphere.
  • Citizens are denied their rights to keep and bear arms sufficient for the restraint of tyranny.
  • Men, women, and children are involuntarily exposed to the corrupting influences of homosexuality, pornography, and other perversities protected and financed by the national government.
  • Sodomy is now legal and celebrated as "diversity" by order of the U.S. Supreme Court rather than condemned as perversion. Another usurpation of the rights of the States by the federal government.
  • Families are subject to the trauma of no-fault divorce, often used to unjustly deny fathers equal protection under law and fundamental family rights.
  • Children are seized from good parents arbitrarily and under false pretexts, and placed in the care of the state, as driven by federal funding.
  • Federal courts prevent children in public schools from freely practicing Christianity.
  • Children who pray in public schools are subject to prosecution.
  • Federal expenditures on education are unconstitutional and promote revisionist history and statist sociology. Our schools continue to teach the discredited theory of Darwinian evolution.

We are violated in our right to Property:

  • Private property is subject to unreasonable restrictions upon use and development by illegal federal environmental and zoning regulations.
  • Private homes may now be arbitrarily seized by government for any reason whatsoever.
  • Private commerce is restricted by overbearing and unwarranted government regulation and taxation.
  • Citizens are taxed without their consent in ways that are unjust, unreasonable, and contrary to the public welfare.

One Nation Indivisible?

One Nation Indivisible? A Study of Secession and the Constitution

_________________________________________________________________________________________

To the People of the various States:

AFTER an unequivocal experience of the inefficiency of the subsisting federal government, you are called upon to deliberate on a new form of government for the various united states. The subject speaks its own importance; comprehending in its consequences nothing less than the disbanding of the UNION, the safety and welfare of the parts of which it is composed, the fate of an empire in the making. It has been frequently remarked that it seems to have been reserved to the people of this country, by their conduct and example, to decide the important question, whether societies of men are really capable or not of establishing good government from reflection and choice, or whether they are forever destined to depend for their political constitutions on accident and force. If there be any truth in the remark, the crisis at which we are arrived may with propriety be regarded as the era in which that decision is to be made; and a wrong election of the part we shall act may, in this view, deserve to be considered as the general misfortune of mankind.
